Visual Campanology The idea for this video started with the book "The Clock Of The Long Now" and a CD that Brian Eno put out called "Bell Studies For The Clock Of The Long Now". I recommend both if you haven't enjoyed them yet. Anyway, I started to research bells and bell ringing, and discovered an old and little known English art called Campanology. The idea is to have a number bells of different tones, arrange them from highest to lowest pitch and number each the bells . The line of bells would look like this 1 2 3 4 5 6. Now the rule. Each sequence or line of bells can be rung only once, and the pattern cannot be repeated. It's all very interesting and fun to do I'm told, but I started to wonder... What would that LOOK like. So I produced six tones on a guitar, and paired each with an image. Then I arranged them into a bell sequence called the Plain Bob Minor. Since there are six tones, the number of permutations would be 6!, or factorial 6. That would require 720 tone/images blocks to produce the Plain Bob Minor. So here it is. Visual Campanology. Each of the sound/image tones were 1 second in length. After I built the timeline and watching it, the pace seemed way too slow to me, so I increased the speed 600%. The guitar sounds like something other than a guitar at this speed, feel free to turn the sound down if it becomes annoying. Anyway, Enjoy! Play Video, Go to YouTube.
